Resume

Below are four example formats to give you ideas for resume content and organization, but your resume should be specific to your particular skills and should accurately reflect your own personal experience.

  • Be detailed about the fundamental skills required to do your job. (For example, specify that you replace cylinders within the engine, rather than only indicating that you repair diesel engines.)
  • List all of your training, courses, and schools that relate to the position for which you are applying. List your certifications and licenses.
  • Be specific about your leadership experience - specify the environment(s) in which you have led groups, and the size of the groups you have experience leading.

Interview

Practice! Ask another person to ask you questions, and to critique your answers – what you said, how you spoke, eye contact, everything. Ask that person to use any question that they want – after all, you never know what question a real interviewer will throw at you.

The key to a good interview is to be yourself, answer the questions truthfully and genuinely, and never shrug your shoulders and say “I don’t know” – think about the question for a couple of seconds, and give your best answer!

Below are a few questions you can practice answering – be specific, and refer to events that actually happened to you. Begin "story" answers by setting the scene, describe what happened, and make sure you conclude with how the situation turned out.

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why are you interested in a job with our company?
  • What are your career goals?
  • What location(s) are you open to? Are you open to relocation?
  • What motivates you?
  • What are your weaknesses? What are your strengths?
  • Describe your leadership style. How do you motivate other people?
  • Tell me about a time you had to resolve a conflict between two of your employees.
  • Tell me about a time you failed, and what you did about it.
  • Tell me about a time you had to accomplish something without the correct resources.
